We have two open PhD positions starting in the Fall semester 2020 at the Computational Laboratory for the Mechanics of Interfaces at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. First research topic centers upon the modeling of texture evolution during processing (e.g. cogging and rolling) of titanium alloys using crystal plasticity and Fast Fourier Transform methods. Efficient computational algorithms will be pursued to couple the specimen/part scale and the mesoscale. Second topic focuses on material behavior in extreme environments, such as creep in conditions above 1000°C, by developing multi-physics models to explain mechanisms observed in recent spatially resolved measurements.
Candidates should possess a master’s degree in civil, mechanical, or other related engineering field at the time of enrollment at UT. A strong background in computational mechanics, materials science of metals, and/or computer programming in MATLAB and FORTRAN is desired. US citizenship or residency is also desired, though not required.
